Quarter Rounds, Series, 2003-present
Wood moldings with various mediums applied
These pieces are moldings that are placed vertically; They
have a rounded front with a back that fits squarely into any
right-angled corner(see below).
The series is primarily an investigation of various forms of line and
texture. I say primarily because other art forms coalesce within this
body of work: As an example, the molding titled 'Watercolor and Blue
Pencil' is a combination of a painting medium and a drawing pencil.
When the piece is exhibited standing upright in a corner it becomes a
sculptural object. Each piece in this series contains references to
drawing, painting, and sculpture.
My single motivation however is articulating line. The simple wood
structure that is usually used in architectual interiors as a
decorative element has become the catalyst for these specific line
investigations. The pieces work best with a large amount of wall space
on both sides. The experience of being confrontred with the line (in a
certain sense still functioning as molding) with nothing else around
it, augments the encounter. It is ironic that these simple works that
are placed in a corner need a generous portion of physical
space in order to give their greatest impact. Most of the pieces contain a hand-drawn line through the center indicating a sense of touch in an otherwise highly formal artwork.
